The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is schedule to meet with IPL team owners shortly at its headquarters in Mumbai. The high-stakes meeting will determine the number of retentions per team for the upcoming season of the league. The IPL committee currently allows only four retentions. This is likely to change as talks of up to six to eight retentions are underway.
For those unfamiliar, MS Dhoni has been the most important cog in the CSK lineup since the franchise’s inception. The most expensive player in the inaugural draft has been the Super Kings’ face for nearly eighteen years. Fans have frequently associated the franchise with the star cricketer, as the Ranchi-born led them to five titles and the most play-offs qualification in the history of the annual tournament.

There has been speculation that Dhoni will leave CSK as a player before the IPL 2025 season begins.
However, the decision is now heavily influence by the BCCI’s maximum retention in its upcoming meet. According to Cricbuzz, Dhoni is only likely to be retain if more than four retentions are permit.
Currently, the cricketer has not confirmed his availability for the franchise in the 2025 season. Allowing speculation to spread like wildfire. However, everything now depends on how the cricketer can sustain himself for another season; however, the Impact Player rule may come to his rescue, as the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side can use players like Sameer Rizvi and Shivam Dube, who frequently substituted for others in the 2024 edition.
For the uninitiated, Gaikwad was given the captaincy mantle. The move confirm as pre-plan a year ago, shortly after CSK won the 2023 season finale against the then-defending champions Gujarat Titans. While it is unclear whether Dhoni will be retain or retire, August 15th is only a few weeks away, and what happens then can only be predicted.
