Pakistan’s fielding woes were highlight during their ICC ODIs Cricket World Cup 2023 match. Against Afghanistan on Monday, October 23 at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. After electing to bat first, the Babar Azam-led side scored 282/7 in their allotted 50 overs, with Captain Babar top-scoring with 74 (92).
Afghanistan responded admirably, with openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran putting on a mammoth 130-run stand for the first wicket. Pakistan appeared flat in the middle of their partnership, committing multiple turnovers on the field.
In addition, Shadab Khan bowled the 16th over of the game, and Gurbaz pushed him towards wide long-on. Afridi, who stationed on the boundary, dashed to the ball. However, he got too far ahead of himself and left the ball behind, which race to the boundary. The misfield ended up costing them dearly as the openers took full advantage and got their team off to a flying start. Rahmanullah Gurbaz ended up scoring 65 (53) while Ibrahim Zadran went on to top score for Afghanistan with his innings of 87 off 113. After messing up in the field, Afridi helped his side get their first breakthrough as he dismissed Gurbaz in the 22nd over.
Afghanistan register first win over Pakistan in ODIs
Following their dismissals, captain Hasmatullah Shahidi (48* off 45) and Rahmat Shah (77* off 84) put up an unbeaten 86-run stand to help Pakistan knock down the mark in 49 overs and record a historic 8-wicket win.
Notably, it was only their third ODIs World Cup victory, and their first versus Pakistan in the format. Shaheen Afridi finished the game with 1/58 off ten overs. They climb to sixth place in the ODI World Cup 2023 points table thanks to their win. With two wins from five matches totaling four points.
