Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and urged New Zealand to bat first once more. Mohammed Shami’s third five-wicket haul of the season limited the Kiwis to 273 runs, proving the judgment was correct.
In the second innings, captain Rohit Sharma once again got his team off to an amazing start, scoring 46 off 40 balls, including four fours and four sixes. The first hitter made his intentions apparent when he flicked Trent Boult for four on the second ball of the first over. He came down the track against Matt Henry in the second over and blasted him over long on for a massive six.

However, the Indian skipper once again failed to complete his half-century as he chopped one back onto the stumps against Lockie Ferguson. As a result, India lost their first wicket on 71 after 11.1 overs. Following his dismissal, Shubman Gill (74 off 81), Shreyas Iyer (33 off 29) and KL Rahul (27 off 35) gave away their starts as New Zealand made a comeback in the middle overs.

Earlier in the day, the Kiwis lost their openers Devon Conway (0 off 9) and Will Young (17 off 27) with only 17 runs on the board after 8.1 overs. Rachin Ravindra (75 off 87) and Daryl Mitchell (130 off 127) saw their team in difficulty and put on a magnificent 159-run stand for the third wicket.
However, following their big stand, India strengthened their grip on the game with Mohammed Shami picking up his third five-wicket haul of the season. The right-arm seamer took 5/54 in ten overs as New Zealand were dismissed for 273 in their allocated 50 overs.
