Jos Buttler on the ‘defending champions’ label. On Thursday, October 5, England will begin their ODI World Cup title defense against New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
England won the 50-over World Cup for the first time under Eoin Morgan’s outstanding leadership. Jos Buttler will lead England into the World Cup four years later, trying to become the third side, after the West Indies and Australia, to retain the prized crown.
Buttler noted that he dislikes being refer to as the ‘defending champions’ after his team defeat New Zealand 3-1 in a recent ODI series at home

Jos Buttler believes his team is in the same boat as the other teams, competing in the tournament from the ground up
“The past is in the past for me.” You can’t duplicate or keep something forever. It’s all about trying new things. It’s good to be champions, especially the reigning champions, and I won’t say we’ve abandon it entirely because it’s a nice place to be. But I have the impression that you have already returned the trophy. It’s finished. It’s about attempting to invent something fresh. ” Buttler quote by ESPNcricinfo as saying this before of the opening ODI World Cup 2023 encounter against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Thursday, October 5.
“We have to be hungry to try it again and to focus on something different.” Things from the past can be useful as reference points: you mention experience, and as a young player, I never believed in it. I assumed you could do it or you couldn’t. But, as an older player, there are occasions when things happen that are great to look back on,” Buttler continued.
England is one of the favorites to win the championship, but Buttler wants to concentrate on each match as it comes.
