SLC to create women’s teams affiliated with top First-Class clubs. SLC will field 10-12 women’s domestic competition teams.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) intends to establish women’s teams connected with leading First-Class clubs. It is understood that the board intends to form at least 10-12 such women’s teams that will be affiliated with major clubs; however, no official timeframe has been established.

SLC President Shammi Silva indicated that the board is in talks with several First-Class clubs and that women’s teams will compete in the upcoming domestic league.

“The top clubs in Sri Lanka, such as SSC, NCC, CC, and Tamil Union, will start fielding women’s teams in the upcoming domestic competitions,” SLC President Shammi Silva stated at a press conference on Tuesday, according to ESPNcricinfo.

That the discussions are in their early stages and that a decision might be made shortly.

“We’ve talked to a few Major League clubs, and we’re hoping to hear back in about two weeks,” he said.

Women’s domestic cricket in the country is now comprise of the Division One Tournament. A limited-overs competition in which eight teams compete. The SLC, on the other hand, plans to add 10-12 additional clubs in future editions of the domestic championship.

Meanwhile, the Major League, Sri Lanka’s top domestic first-class league, features up to 26 clubs. If a new set of teams is introduce, the women’s national team will undoubtedly benefit in the future years.

The SLC had already announced that the women’s cricket squad will get the same match fee as their male counterparts. In terms of the national squad, Sri Lanka Women will face England in a three-match T20I series beginning on August 31. Chamari Athapaththu and company will travel to their next assignment after losing a T20I series 2-1 at home to New Zealand.
