Greg Barclay was first elected in December 2020
Unlike in 2020, Barclay is expect to have an easy ride this time because he is unlikely to face any resistance. Dr Tavengwa Mukuhlani, the chair of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), is anticipating to withdraw his nomination. The election is on November 12.
As of Friday (November 11), the election is still a two-way race between the New Zealander and the Zimbabwean, although sources in Melbourne believe Mukuhlani may quit on election day. The ICC directors are to achieve some sort of agreement.
Two existing directors must endorse a candidate for office. Any candidate aspiring to lead the global organization will almost certainly need the support of the BCCI, which is widely seen inside the ICC as signaling such support. The BCCI decided not to field a candidate.
The whole election process has been cloaked in secrecy, with no ICC official or member able to shed light on its progress. Indeed, ICC monitors have expressed concerns about the process’s secrecy.
