What Does ‘Fake Fielding’ Mean Under ICC Law? Bangladesh vice-captain Nurul Hasan claimed the on-field umpires missed Virat Kohli’s “fake throw” that might have knotted the match.
Following India’s five-run DLS victory against Bangladesh in a 2022 T20 World Cup Super 12 game on Thursday. A controversy erupted as vice-captain Nurul Hasan claimed that on-field umpires missed a “fake throw” by Kohli that might have knotted the match. He told reporters, “It might have been a five-run penalty.” “That may have also gone our way, but regrettably… that didn’t happen.” Liton Das played the ball towards the deep off-side field off Axar Patel in the seventh over of Bangladesh’s innings, just before rain suspended play. As Arshdeep Singh of India tossed the ball back, Kohli, who was positioned at point, simulated a throw as the ball whistled by him.
Despite Liton and non-striking batsman Najmul Hossain pointing it out. Umpires Marais Erasmus and Chris Brown did not take action, according to a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official.

What does ICC Law say about phony fielding?
“It is unfair for any fielder willfully to attempt, by speech or action, to divert, mislead, or hinder. Any batter after the striker has received the ball,” according to ICC Law 41.5.1.
The law continues, “It is for either umpire to decide whether any distraction, deception, or obstruction is wilful or not,” and “if either umpire considers that a fielder has caused or attempted to cause such a distraction, deception, or obstruction, he/she shall immediately call and signal Dead ball and notify the other umpire of the reason for the call.” In such a circumstance, the law specifies that “the bowler’s end umpire shall give 5 Penalty runs to the batting side.”
The International Cricket Council will convene a board meeting in Melbourne next week during the event, and Bangladesh will discuss the issue “if an occasion arises,” according to BCB cricket operations head Jalal Yunus.
“We will discuss the concerns whenever we get the opportunity,” he continued. “It’s not a protest since there’s no use in doing it right now.”
