‘Youngsters will get greater exposure,’ says Shikhar Dhawan ahead of the first One-Day International against South Africa. Shikhar Dhawan will captain India in the forthcoming three-match One-Day International series against South Africa.
India will be missing their usual skipper Rohit Sharma, who, along with the other players nominated to India’s T20 World Cup roster, will fly for Australia shortly.
Shikhar Dhawan is likely to take over as India’s captain in Rohit’s absence. Despite not being picked to the T20 World Cup roster, Dhawan is an important member of India’s ODI team. During the ODI series, he will have to manage a group of young and inexperienced players.
Players like Rajat Patidar, Mukesh Kumar, and Shahbaz Ahmed are members of India’s ODI team against South Africa and would be eager to perform well against the Proteas if given the chance.

Shikhar Dhawan confident that the youngsters will get more exposure
With India ready to host the upcoming 50-over World Cup in 2023, Dhawan feels that the three-match series against the Proteas would be crucial in terms of exposing the rookies.
“This series is a good exposure ahead of the 2023 World Cup. Youngsters will get more exposure playing against a great team. There are benefits all around. It will increase their experience and confidence. They have been doing well. They will learn from their mistakes as they play more. It is important for me to play as much as possible ahead of the World Cup.”
Dhawan stated in a pre-match press conference on the eve of the first ODI against South Africa.
“Whenever possible, I pass on my knowledge to youngsters. Now there is new responsibility on me but I see opportunity in challenges and I enjoy it.”
Dhawan Added
“My goal currently is the 2023 World Cup. I just want to keep myself fit and be in a good state of mind to be in the fray.”

The optional training session for Team India on October 5 was canceled owing to incessant precipitation in Lucknow.
