The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Zimbabwe, which begins on August 18. The Indian management has decided to rest key senior players Virat Kohli. Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah for the second time this season. All five of these players were absent from India’s most recent ODI series against the West Indies. Kohli and Bumrah are not even participating in the ongoing T20I series.
Shikhar Dhawan, who led India to a 3-0 series victory over the West Indies, will captain the 15-man squad on the Zimbabwe tour. Fans have already questioned the BCCI’s decision to rest senior players after only one series, which is not the first time this year. Since the beginning of the year, the Indian management has rotated captaincy duties among seven players.
Regular captain Rohit Sharma rested for India’s home T20I series against South Africa
Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya received their first caps as captains last month, as did pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the fifth rescheduled Test match against England earlier this month. Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif believes that this rotation is counterproductive and that India is repeating the same mistake that Pakistan made in the 1990s.
“Everyone mentions backup. However, in the last year, they have produced seven backup captains! This is the first time I’ve seen anything like this in Indian history. “Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah are making the same mistake that Pakistan made in the 1990s,” Rashid Latif said on his YouTube channel.

There is no captain who plays consistently: Rashid Latif
KL, the star opening batter Rahul is Rohit’s deputy in all three formats, but he hasn’t played since the Indian Premier League 2022 concluded at the end of May. He has been hampered by injuries in recent months, and he recently missed his comeback on the West Indies tour due to the Covid-19 virus. With both Rahul and Rohit missing a significant number of matches recently, it is clear that India is looking for future captaincy options. However, Latif added that no current captaincy option is currently playing regular cricket, and India requires a leader in the mold of former captains Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Kohli.
“They haven’t found a reliable opener, nor do they have a consistent middle order.” They simply desire a new captain. They have no captain who plays consistently. KL Rahul is currently unable to perform; Rohit was previously unable to perform. Virat is mentally ill. As a result, they will have to think about it. They are replacing so many captains… they need a leader like Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, or Virat Kohli,” Rashid Latif added.
