Ravi Ashwin is unlikely to play in the T20 World Cup: Parthiv Patel. Despite India having three spin options, Kuldeep Yadav was benched.
Ravichandran Ashwin was outstanding in his return to international cricket against the West Indies in the first Twenty20 International match on Friday. He scored 13* runs off ten balls as part of an unbeaten 52-run partnership with Dinesh Karthik to help India bat first and reach 190/6. Ashwin also shone with the ball, taking two crucial wickets of Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer while conceding only 22 runs in his four-over spell.
As Indian captain Rohit Sharma used three spin options, Ashwin was a surprise inclusion in the team. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Bishnoi also started the game and contributed significantly to India’s victory. Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel, however, believes that the veteran spinner will not play in the next game if India uses two spin bowlers. He also stated that Ashwin will not play in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.
“In the next game, I see Bishnoi playing ahead of Ashwin” (if India decide to go with two spinners). To be honest, I don’t see Ashwin playing in the T20 World Cup. I’d like to see more variety from Kuldeep Yadav, Bishnoi, and (Yuzvendra) Chahal. Wrist spinners provide an attacking option in the middle. “You won’t get that from Ashwin,” Parthiv Patel told Cricbuzz.

He (Rohit) made certain that the spinners bowled at various times: Parthiv Patel
Yuzvendra Chahal, a key Indian spinner, has been rested for this five-match T20I series. Kuldeep Yadav was named to the squad but was benched for the first match, despite India fielding three spinners. When Chahal returns to the squad for future series, Ashwin will struggle to compete, and the Indian management is likely to play with only two spinners in Australia. Parthiv lauded Rohit’s decision to use three spinners and the way he rotated all spin bowlers from the start.
“Three spinners in a T20 or one-day game is unusual, even in India.” India has been brilliant tactically throughout this tour. Even in the most recent ODI, when they came in to bat after rain, they assumed (more) rain would fall, and they played accordingly. Today, I’m also playing three spinners tactically.”
“He (Rohit) made certain that the spinners bowled at various times.” At the end, we saw Ravi Bishnoi bowl four overs in a row. In the first six overs, Ashwin and Jadeja bowled. Normally, Ashwin bowls with the new ball, but not Jadeja. However, we saw Jadeja bowl due to two right-handed match-ups. “Rohit was at his best,” Parthiv added.
