When Kohli made his international debut, former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar was the chairman of selectors, and he recall the moment he saw Kohli play for the first time and how he chose him for the Emerging Players’ Tournament in Australia.
When India takes on Sri Lanka in the first of a two-match Test series in Mohali on Friday. Kohli will become the 100th cricketer to play a Test match.
Kohli will become the world’s 71st player to play 100 Tests. Kohli’s international cricket career began in August 2008, when he was select to play in an ODI against Sri Lanka. In 2011, he made his Test debut.
Former India captain Dilip was the chairman of selectors when Kohli made his international debut, and in a video shared by BCCI on Twitter. He recounted the moment he saw Kohli play for the first time.

“I saw Virat Kohli for the first time at a U-16 tournament in Kolkata. Where he was playing for Delhi schools against Mumbai schools. He didn’t hit many home runs, but he was a force to be reckon with.
“Of course, he went on to play for India’s U-19 team, and they won the World Cup.”

“I was the chairman of the selection committee for the emerging players’ tournament in Australia,” Vengsarkar said. “We picked U-23 boys because we felt emerging players should be under 23 because they are the future of Indian cricket.”

Kohli has 7962 runs at an average of 50.39 in 99 Tests so far.
