Anwesh Upadhyaya an Indian chess player, is stuck in Ukraine and describes the situation as “scary.”

Former Indian national fast chess champion A. Upadhyaya. is one of several of his compatriots trapper in Ukraine during a Russian invasion, alone in his flat and terrified.  He is anxiously hoping to be evacuate from the country that has been his home since 2012.

The 30-year- old was planning on returning to India in March after finishing a gastroenterologist internship  at a Kyiv hospital. As a result of Russia’s military activity, flights have been halted, and he is unsure what will happen next. This level of escalation was unexpected. It’s a full-fledged military assault.  From Kyiv, the 2017  national  rapid chess champion told PTI, “Never imagined this.”

Harsh Vardhan Shringla, India’s Foreign Secretary. Informed all Indian citizens in Ukraine that the government will take all necessary steps to ensure their safe return.

According to him, there are approximately 20,000 Indians in Ukraine. With roughly 4,000 returning to India in the last few days.

Upadhyaya said he has witnessed unrest in the country, recalling student protests in 2013 against then-President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision not to sign an accord bringing Ukraine closer to the European Union.

But, he said, nothing compared to the turmoil that has erupted in recent days.

“I was present at the Maidan Revolution, which was unpleasant but not this scary,” Upadhyaya said.

My folks in India are frightened, which is why I intend to leave in the first week of March,” he said, referring to his family in Bhubaneswar.
