David Lloyd Announces Retirement From Commentary After 22 Years With Sky Sports

David Lloyd, the former England batter and coach, has announced his retirement, after 22 years as a commentator for Sky Sports.

Following the retirement of three long-time colleagues, David Gower, Ian Botham, and Michael Holding. As well as the death of Bob Willis, Lloyd, 74, observed that “the commentary box feels a little emptier.”

David Lloyd said in a statement:

“I’ve come to the conclusion that the time has come to hand over the microphone,”

“It’s been an incredible honor to try to bring the sport I love into people’s homes around the country,” he says. Sharing a commentary box with my broadcasting hero Bill Lawry in Australia in 2013 was a true thrill. Working with Ian Bishop, Ravi Shastri, Shane Warne, Shaun Pollock, and Ian Smith, among others, has been a wonderful pleasure.

“It’s been an immense privilege to try and bring the sport I love into people’s homes up and down the country,” he said

“With Bob Willis’ passing and my good friends David Gower, Ian Botham, and, most recently, Michael Holding’s choice to go on, the commentary box feels a little emptier. As a result, I believe it is time for me to move on to the next chapter.” I now hand over control of the Sky box to my friends Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Ian Ward, and Rob Key. Keep that microphone safe for those who come after you. So that the future generation might fall in love with this amazing game, we need to educate and entertain them.”

David Lloyd’s retirement comes just a month after apologizing to Azeem Rafiq for an exchange

At the time, Sky stated that it was “committed to actively advocating inclusiveness in cricket. And in other sports – and rejecting all forms of discrimination,” and that it will look into Lloyd’s remarks.
