He has had a similar influence in franchise cricket, where the 35-year-old has recovered his place in the limited-over format. However, according to Ashwin, there was a time between 2018 and 2020 when he “considered retirement.”

“Between 2018 and 2020, I considered retiring from the sport on several occasions. “I’ve put in a lot of effort, but it’s not paying off,” I reasoned.
It seemed like the farther I went, the harder I tried. I used to bowl six balls and then be gasping for air, especially with athletic pubalgia and patellar tendinitis. And there would be a lot of suffering.”
R Ashwin went on to say that he had to make numerous adaptations in order to stay in the sport

Giving more insight into his thought process at the time. Ashwin stated that there was a lack of support that caused him to consider finding something new to excel at.
In the interview, Ashwin stated that the decision to retire from cricket came in stages, with the series against England in 2018 being one of them.
