England predicament wasn’t bad enough, with a 456-run deficit into the third day of the Ashes Test in Adelaide, the ICC added insult to injury by deducting them three extra points for sluggish over rates in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.
The ICC’s explanation on a total of eight penalty points comes as the team faces a monumental job in reclaiming the second Ashes Test in Adelaide.
For maintaining a slow over-rate in the first Test at the Gabba. England has originally penalized five World Test Championship (WTC) points and fined 100 percent of their match fees. But the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Friday that the penalty would now be increased to eight points in total.
The ICC said in a statement:
“It was announced last Saturday that England would be penalized five WTC points, one for each over they were deemed to have gone short by originally,”
“However, it has subsequently been revealed that they were eight overs short, meaning they would lose three further points.”
“As per Clause 16.1.2 of the ICC Playing Conditions, the points deduction for penalty overs is not capped and must represent the actual number of penalty overs a team is short of the minimum criteria, hence they have been penalized one point for each over they were short.”
