Ben Brown joins Sussex exodus after requesting early contract release

Ben Brown was released from his contract with Sussex two years early at his own choice, becoming the club’s third high-profile departure after Chris Jordan and Phil Salt. In mid-summer, the veteran wicketkeeper was relieved of his captaincy.

Brown has been a Sussex player since he was 11 years old, and he has played in the first team since 2007. He was appointed full-time club captain in 2018 after taking up the role midway through the 2017 season, and he sign a contract extension for 2020, although Sussex declare midway through last summer that “the time is right for fresh leadership.”

He was omitted from their Royal London Cup squad for a short time, and when he returns, he was chosen as a specialist hitter rather than a wicketkeeper. Despite the turmoil – and being ask to bat out of position at No. 3 in the final month of the season – Brown had his most productive Championship season, scoring 976 runs at 51.36 and hitting four hundred.

Sussex chief executive Rob Andrew said in a statement:

“Ben had two seasons left on his contract and, as you’d expect with a player of his caliber, was very much a part of our future plans,”

“We’ve working hard to find a way ahead that keeps him at the club, and we thought we’d be able to do it until later.” However, it’s evident that Ben is ready for a change, and keeping him at Sussex against his will would be in no one’s best interests.”

“Despite our hopes that it wouldn’t be necessary, once Ben said that he was uneasy, we had no choice but to start looking for successors for next summer. Ben has been a part of Sussex for over two decades and has an impressive track record. With the bat, the gloves, and his captaincy, he has always given his all.”

But he is sure to be a popular signing. He has 22 first-class hundreds, a career average of above 40, and leadership experience.

Ben Brown is largely regards as one of the top wicketkeepers in the country. He has less T20 experience, therefore he isn’t in the Hundred, but he did make his first List A century against Middlesex in August.

Since their relegation from Division One of the Championship in 2015, Sussex has been in a state of change in four-day cricket. Under Jason Gillespie, they were expecting to challenge for promotion but never managed to finish in the top two, and they earned the wooden spoon in Ian Salisbury’s first season in charge in 2021, despite playing the country’s youngest team and deploying as many as 26 different players.
