Sourav Ganguly: ‘Had requested Virat not to step down as T20I captain’

Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, confirmed that the board had asked Virat Kohli to stay on as India’s T20I captain, but that once he decided to step down, the selectors decided to remove him from the ODI captaincy and replace him with Rohit Sharma to avoid “too much leadership” in India’s short-format squads.

Despite Kohli’s success as an ODI captain, Ganguly said he supported the decision. Only three leaders in the globe have a better win-loss record than Kohli, with 60 captains having led in 50 or more ODIs.

On Wednesday, Rohit, who had previously led India in T20Is, was chosen the new ODI captain, as well as being promoted to vice-captaincy of the Test team (as Kohli’s deputy) in lieu of Ajinkya Rahane.

“The selectors felt that they cannot have two white-ball captains in two white-ball formats – that’s too much of leadership”

Sourav Ganguly said:

Was there any concern that having two captains for the two white-ball teams might cause some confusion? “I don’t know about bewilderment,”

“But that’s how they [the selectors] felt.” “That’s how we came to this conclusion: let Rohit command the white-ball [cricket] team and Virat lead the red-ball team.”

Rohit has long been seen as a future Indian captain, owing to his success in the IPL. Where he has led Mumbai Indians to a record five titles in just eight. And a half seasons in charge – he took over midway through the 2013 season, replacing Ricky Ponting, and has commanded the team ever since.

Ganguly refused to comment on India’s chances in ODIs and T20Is under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, stating only:

“It’s extremely difficult to forecast. I wish him the best of luck and hope he succeeds.”

Chetan Sharma, the chairman of selectors, and Ganguly have spoken to Kohli about the situation. According to the former India captain. “Yes, I’ve spoken to Virat personally about it. And Chairman of Selectors Chetan Sharma has also spoken to him about it.”
