Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley would like to see Tim Paine back to the Test side, after defending his organization’s handling of the former skipper’s demotion. Following his resignation, the former captain sought a mental health leave.
Three weeks before the men’s Ashes, Paine resigned as captain with tears in his eyes. He had expected to participate in the series opener this week in Brisbane but instead chose to take a mental-health vacation, sparking rumors that he may never play for Australia again.
A texting message incident involving a Cricket Tasmania employee in 2017 was the impetus for Paine’s abrupt departure
CA made aware of the incident in 2018 but supported Paine’s decision to continue playing and captaining Australia at the time, keen to repair the team’s image following the Cape Town cheating scandal.
Coach Justin Langer has shown public and private support for Paine, coming to Hobart after being releasing from quarantine and keeping the door open for his “very close” buddy to return to the baggy green.
Paine, who set to retire at the end of this summer before word of his indiscretion leak, will return to the Test XI, according to Hockley.
“I’d love to see him play for his state and Australia again,” Hockley told SEN. “As soon as possible, we want to see him out there playing and performing.”
Paine would be recall on little evidence due to the Sheffield Shield break unless selectors want him to participate in a planned tour of Pakistan in March. Paine’s home ground is anticipating to host the fifth Test, though Hockley gave no indication whether Hobart will win the bidding war.
CA has faced a barrage of criticism in recent weeks over its handling of Paine. The most significant of which came from Cricket Tasmania chair Andrew Gaggin.
“At a time when CA should have been rallying behind Tim, he’s clearly seen as expendable. Cricket Australia’s handling of the Australian Test captain has been horrible. And it is the worst since Bill Lawry over 50 years ago “Gaggin explains. In the 1970-71 Ashes, Lawry was fired, and the news reaching him through the media.
Cricket Australia is attempting to help Paine, according to Hockley, who was appointed chief executive on a caretaker basis in 2020 and granted the role permanently over a year later
“We’ve had members of our high performance set up go down to Tassie. And the head coach has been down to meet him. The Tasmanian cricket community has rallied around him “Hockley said. “We’re all very worried about Tim and want to make sure he’s adequately supported. Tim deserves a lot of credit for owning up to his error. And our responsibility now is to fully support him.”

Paine took the decision to stand down as captain on his own. But “the board felt that was acceptable,” according to Hockley.
