Matthew Gilkes seemed in command, hitting the second ball he faced through point for four runs and then flicking another off his pads for six runs two overs later.

Thunder was subsequently reduced to 2 for 28 when Sam Whiteman was bowled for 12 by debutant Heat paceman Liam Guthrie, who spooned a pull shot down midwicket’s neck. Guthrie had a double thrill two balls later when he trapped Gilkes lbw and dismissed the danger man for 20 off 10 balls.

The thunder was floundering until Sam Billings came in and played the perfect supporting role for Ross, allowing them to win by 17 runs

Thunderclaps Earlier, Daniel Sams and Gurinder Sandhu shared five wickets. With openers, Max Bryant and Chris Lynn were removed in short succession. The Heat have reduced to 2 for 20 in their opening four overs.

Bryant was dismissed for 5 after hitting Ross with a leading-edge off Nathan McAndrew’s bowling. Three balls later, Lynn joined him, slamming one straight to short cover off Sandhu.

Ben Duckett and Sam Heazlett kept their cool and crossed the 10-over mark at 2 for 58. Having laid the groundwork for their team. As the pressure mounted, Heazlett teed off. And fortunate to be dropping twice in the 12th over after skying Ben Cutting.

Heat smashed 12 off the opening over of their Power Surge before Heazlett miscued a slower ball. And was caught and bowled by Sams.

Bartlett’s cameo 26 off 18 balls helped Heat find some late runs. In the 18th over when he smashed one into the Bob Hawke Stand.
