Perth made a last-minute plea to switch its Ashes cricket Test with Adelaide on Monday to avoid Covid quarantine concerns, which a senior government official described as a “no-brainer.”

Due to its severe border laws, the Western Australian city appears certain to be dropped as the site of what might be a pivotal fifth and final Test between Australia and England in January.
There had been talking of easing some of the rigorous Covid requirements for cricketers, but the arrival of the new Omicron type has complicated things.
Premier Mark McGowan announced last week that the state’s strict quarantine laws would remain in place, requiring players returning from the fourth Test in Sydney to quarantine for two weeks upon arrival.
Western Australia, on the other hand, does not currently have such a condition for visitors arriving from Brisbane, where the first Test begins on Wednesday.

“If cricket can’t fulfill our border rules for the fifth Test in Perth, the second Test should be moved there instead. It’s a no-brainer, isn’t it? “He told a newspaper in Western Australia.
“The teams can fly straight to Perth following the Brisbane Test as long as Queensland is Covid-free. No one will have to bother about quarantine or Covid protocols after that.”
“Adelaide can then host the fifth Test originally scheduled for Perth,” he added.
The destiny of the fifth Test is set to be decided this week, with Hobart, Melbourne, and Sydney all in the running to host if Perth is dropped.
The Ashes will be playing in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney before heading to Perth.
