Manchester United: Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Manchester United defeated Arsenal 3-2 in a tense Premier League match on Thursday, passing the 800-goal mark for club and country. United, who had caretaker manager Michael Carrick on the bench, was monitored by new temporary manager Ralf Rangnick, and Carrick announced his departure after the game.
After taking over following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last month, Carrick was unbeaten in his three matches in charge of the team.
Manchester United’s fans paid tribute to Solskjaer before the game with a banner in the Stretford End declaring “20-Legend,” a reference to the Norwegian’s old shirt number
During an end-to-end match, though, it was another legend, Ronaldo, who stole center stage.
In the 13th minute, Arsenal took the lead after United goalkeeper David De Gea went down clutching his foot after being stood on by teammate Fred, and Emile Smith Rowe blasted a shot into the unguarded goal from the edge of the box.
The goal stood because referee Martin Atkinson had not blown his whistle before the ball went into the net and no foul had occurred.

But a Bruno Fernandes strike a minute before the break leveled the score. Thanks to a wonderful back-heeled set-up from Fred.
In the 52nd minute, Diogo Dalot found Marcus Rashford on the right flank. And the winger’s low cross was neatly finished by Ronaldo for his 800th goal for United.
Martin Odegaard, who arrived on the edge of the box. To head in a superb low pass from Gabriel Martinelli, gave the Gunners a fast response.
After Atkinson went to the pitchside monitor. And judged that Fred had been brought down by Odegaard, Ronaldo scored the winner from the penalty spot.
United moved up to seventh place in the rankings. Two points and two places behind Arsenal and 12 points behind leaders Chelsea.
Fernandes said:
“Every win is important. It’s been hard for us. Today we got a great win. We can be satisfied because we beat Arsenal,”
Carrick, a former United midfielder, revealed his decision shortly after the final whistle. Bringing his 15-year tenure at the club to a stop.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, found positives in his team’s performance but felt they defended poorly.
Carrick said in a statement:
“It’s not been an easy decision to make but I feel it’s the right one. I was going to take time off after I finished playing and it never happened. It feels like the right time to step away and what a way to finish,”
