Reece Topley was called into England’s squad as a late replacement for injured Tymal Mills midway through the 2017 T20 World Cup in the UAE.
England aims to use his time with the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL to further his case. Quick with the left arm Reece Topley is looking to utilize the Big Bash League to bolster his case for a spot in England’s first-choice squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year.
He’s never played in the BBL before and has only appeared in one England Lions List A game in Australia, back in 2013, but he’s hoping that a complete season with the Melbourne Renegades would put him firmly in the running for a spot in next year’s World Cup.
Reece Topley said:
“It’s definitely an opportunity,”
“and one that I aim to seize in order to impress the appropriate people.”
“But, clearly, being in Dubai gave me the impression that I was prepared if the opportunity arose. Regrettably, it never did. But, you know, having this planned for when I left there was wonderful. It was also a terrific chance for him to get some playing experience after sitting on the bench for about a month.”
Despite not being able to play, Topley felt the experience in the UAE useful. He was especially grateful for the time he spent with Chris Woakes and Chris Jordan, the new Surrey T20 captain and Sydney Sixers recruit.
“Being around someone like Chris Jordan and trying to take things away from how he goes about it at different stages of the game,” Topley added. “Even someone with bowling up top, like Woakesy, why wouldn’t you if you’ve got those folks in the changing room?”

His career halted after making his T20I debut against Australia in Cardiff in 2015. And playing international cricket for the next year, notably at the 2016 T20 World Cup.
However, a trip to Melbourne in 2018-19 offered him a terrific opportunity to train with Victoria on an ad hoc basis while he continued his rehab. And the Renegades won the BBL title that year, so it remains a nice memory.
Topley is looking forward to working with new coach David Saker. And bowling coach Mick Lewis in Australia, especially on determining the proper lengths and variations.
But, above all, he is relieved to be back in shape and playing consistently.
