R Ashwin: In a video posted after the first IND vs NZ match in Kanpur, India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Tests made a shocking announcement to colleague Shreyas Iyer.
Life isn’t always a level playing field. There are times when you are let down by no fault of your own, and it is up to you to make amends. And no one in international cricket today can connect to this more than India’s senior off-spinner R Ashwin.
Despite being one of the best spinners the country has ever produced, the Tamil Nadu bowler is frequently left out of Tests for odd reasons. But he never backs down, which is why he is considered a modern-day legend.
In an interview with colleague Shreyas Iyer for BCCI.tv:
Ashwin revealed that he was at a crossroads last year and wasn’t sure if he’d ever play in the whites again.
Hours after passing Harbhajan Singh to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Tests, he made this statement, which speaks volumes about the hardships that stars face.
On Monday, the 35-year-old Ashwin, who took his 419th wicket in his 80th Test to overtake Harbhajan Singh (417 in 103 Tests), said he had an open conversation with Iyer.
R Ashwin said:
“To be extremely modest about what has happened in my life and career over the last couple of years,”
“didn’t know if I would go on to play Test cricket while we were in the pandemic, in the lockdown.”
“I hadn’t played in the last Test between India and New Zealand in Christchurch (which began on February 29, 2020). I was at a fork in the road, pondering if I would play Tests again, where my future was headed, and whether I would make the Test team, which is the only format I play. But, thanks to God’s grace, I’ve been able to turn things around “he stated
“I then moved to Delhi Capitals when you (Shreyas) were captain, and things have changed ever since,” he remarked in the interview, which was uploaded on BCCI’s official Twitter account.

After India and New Zealand played to a thrilling draw in Kanpur, the video was uploaded. On a Day 5 pitch in India, the Kiwis batted through the day. Needing 280 runs to win with 9 wickets in hand. The final combination of Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel batted for 51 balls.
“After the game, it’s still settling in, the reality that we couldn’t win. We were so near yet so far,” Ashwin said of the game. It’s a difficult thing for me to overcome.
