Lance Klusener has decided to step down as Afghanistan’s head coach. The current contract of Lance Klusener expires on December 31. His contract, which runs on December 31, 2021, will not be extended for the former South African allrounder, who was appointed to the position in September 2019.
Lance Klusener said in a press release on Monday:
“After two years with the squad, I will take away some wonderful moments,”
“As I leave the Afghanistan cricket team and its cricketing framework behind, I am looking forward to the next step of my coaching career and the chances it will provide.”
Despite the fact that they didn’t play any cricket in 2020 because to Covid-19, Afghanistan fared well under Klusener, winning one of three Tests, three of six ODIs, and nine of fourteen T20Is. Afghanistan defeated West Indies 2-1 in the T20I series in India during his debut series as coach.
They also defeated Ireland 3-0 in one-day internationals and 2-1 in T20Is earlier this year. They were eliminated from the group stage of the recently ended T20 World Cup after winning only two of their five matches. When Covid-19 struck last year, he turned to online coaching.
Lance Klusener from 1996 to 2004 represented South Africa in 49 Tests and 171 One-Day Internationals

After Phil Simmons’ departure following the 2019 World Cup, Klusener took over from Andy Moles, who had been serving as the team’s temporary head coach. After that, Klusener’s contract was extended until the end of 2020.
He was one of the top all-rounders in South Africa at the time, scoring 1906 runs and taking 80 wickets in Tests and 3576 runs, and 192 wickets in ODIs. Following his retirement, he worked with international and domestic teams, as well as IPL clubs, in various coaching roles.
