New Zealand is the world’s number one Test team and the incumbent World Test champions, but they are wary of the hosts, who have proven to be formidable in home conditions on several occasions.
On the eve of the first Test in Kanpur, Williamson observed, “I don’t think we are favorites.”
“The depth of Indian cricket is one of its greatest assets. India is well-versed in its own circumstances, and we recognize the magnitude of the issue.”
In June, Williamson guided New Zealand to an eight-wicket victory over India in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in Southampton, a loss that the hosts would be hoping to avenge.
New Zealand has five spinners in their roster, with three of them potentially playing in the match.
Kane Williamson said:
“The spin component has been really substantial in this region of the world, and it has played a big influence in changing the complexion of the game,”
“I am confident that the spin component will play a role throughout the series, and Kanpur will be no exception. It’ll all come down to appraising the situation as swiftly as possible.”
Ajinkya Rahane, India’s stand-in captain, said his team would miss their first-choice players, but their replacements were ready to step up and be counted.
“It’s an opportunity for kids to believe in themselves and play freely,” Rahane remarked.
He dismissed concerns about his own erratic play, suggesting he was only one game away from a massive score.
“What I’m worried about is how I’ll fit into the squad. You won’t be able to hit a hundred every time you take the field.”
