A bowler had a tough time on the field as Pieter Malan and Tony de Zorzi both struck hundreds to lift South Africa A to 343 for three at stumps.
The Priyank Panchal-led side took two early wickets before Malan (157 batting off 258 balls) and Zorzi (117 of 186) produced a 217-run third-wicket stand to put South Africa A in a solid position in the four-day tournament.
Navdeep Saini, who has lost his position in the Indian team, as well as left-arm pacesetter Arzan Nagwaswalla and Umran Malik, who was selected in the A squad after impressing with his extra pace in the IPL, each got a wicket.
Rahul Chahar, K Gowtham, and Baba Aparajith, the three spinners, all failed to take a wicket. Chahar let up 75 runs in 19 overs during the recent home T20 series against New Zealand.
The three-match series will take place ahead of the senior team’s tour of South Africa, which will begin next month. The squad also includes opener Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari, who was controversially left out of the two home Tests against New Zealand.
