Rohit Sharma: India delivered T20 World Cup runners-up New Zealand the ignominy of a 3-0 series defeat with a 73-run win in the third T20 International in Kolkata on Sunday. Rohit Sharma batted in style and led with panache to create a near-perfect tale on his full-time leadership debut.
Highlights
- In Kolkata, India defeated New Zealand by 73 runs in the third Twenty20 International
- India scored 184/7 before dismissing New Zealand for 111
- The victory gave the hosts a 3-0 clean sweep.
The Indian captain first made a statement by smashing 56 off 31 balls in India’s 184 for 7 before making some brilliant captaincy decisions that saw New Zealand surrender for just 111 runs in 17.2 overs.
After defeating the Black Caps 5-0 in their own backyard in 2020, India won the bilateral T20I series for the second time in a row with a complete sweep.
Axar Patel (3/9) bowled with accuracy and got one to turn as his three wickets in the Powerplay effectively ended New Zealand’s resistance, and the rest was a formality.
After a grueling T20 World Cup campaign, the New Zealand team appeared exhausted, and the result will not be a true representation of the team’s ability, as they went through the motions for the majority of the three games.
The series victory will undoubtedly provide a few clues for India, which we’re hoping to reset the clock.
This series was a test for Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid to see what kind of weaponry they have going forward
The return to the form of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravichandran Ashwin in white-ball cricket bodes well since there is no substitute for experience.
Venkatesh Iyer has shown promise and should be pursued further. After being a top-order batsman, he bowled steadily and needs more game time to develop into a middle-order enforcer.
With his honest efforts, Harshal Patel is a good addition. But the middle order remains a bit shaky since it failed to deliver in either of the games.
A few, such as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Avesh Khan, were not put to the test. But the skipper will undoubtedly utilize all of his options in the future.
But, like his predecessor Virat Kohli. He has demonstrated the ability to walk the talk with performances that his teammates will admire. When India batted, Rohit Sharma was in commanding form, laying the foundation for an above-par total.
The skipper led the way with five fours and three sixes in his sublime knock. But the Indians stuttered in the middle overs before Harshal Patel (18 off 11 balls). And Deepak Chahar (21 not out off 8 balls) used their long handles to fetch 50 runs in the last five overs, putting the team’s character to the test.

Rohit blasted Adam Milne (0/47 in 4 overs) over long-on for his second maximum. While the third off Lockie Ferguson was another pull behind the square into the stand below the enormous electronic scoreboard.
Stand-in captain Mitchell Santner (4-0-27-3) was able to pull things back. After Kishan edged an arm ball into the keeper’s palms. And Suryakumar Yadav (0) played a loose shot to a flung-up delivery, gifting an easy catch to the cover, much to his skipper’s chagrin.
Rishabh Pant went for a terrible hoick to give Santner his third wicket in his second over. Adding to Rohit’s displeasure.
But Rohit didn’t let the loss of wicket slow him down. Scoring his fifty against his opposite number with a deliberate cut into the vacant third-man area.
His previous six T20 International scores have been 74, 30, 56, 48, 55, and 56, and captaincy hasn’t impacted his style of play in the least. Ish Sodhi made a fantastic one-handed reflex catch to remove Rohit.
