Mickey Arthur final task as Sri Lanka’s Head Coach will be the next Test series against the West Indies later this month. Following the conclusion of the two-Test series, Arthur will take over as Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket.
The 53-year-old took over as Sri Lanka’s coach in February of last year when the team was going through a difficult period. They have recently shown indications of improvement, as evidenced by a respectable performance in the T20 World Cup, where they won five and lost three games.
Mickey Arthur tweeted:
Sad that it is the end of the road with SL after the WI test series! I have loved every minute of coaching this great country! To the players and people of SL, a big thank you! I know SL cricket is in a better place now than when I started!
Arthur, who is most known for guiding South Africa from 2005 to 2010, went on to manage Australia before winning the Champions Trophy with Pakistan in 2017. Dave Houghton, who departed Derbyshire following the 2021 season, will now take his spot.
“This is the start of an exciting project at Derbyshire, with many young players, and I’m really excited to be a part of that and to bring my vision to the Club,” Arthur said.
“It’s a new challenge and one which I’m eager to get stuck into and lead this Club to success. There’s a good squad at Derbyshire and I want us to play a positive style of cricket. We won’t fear any team and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve for our supporters.”
On November 21, the first of two Tests in Galle will begin. The second Test, Arthur’s final match against Sri Lanka, is set to start on November 29. After which he will join Derbyshire.
