ICC: Having an event every year will help our broadcasters improve their investment

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s R 12715 crore bonanza from the sale of two extra franchises has raised expectations for the upcoming IPL media rights tender for the next five years (2023-27).

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is also scheduled to enter the market early next year with its events (2024-31).

Expect a lot of churn in this arena in the coming months because the ICC media rights are so reliant on the Indian market. Both of these assets are currently owned by Star India (IPL: R16348 crores for 5 years, ICC events: USD 1.9 billion for 8 years).

However, considering the premium that both of these traits are expected to command, one entity owning both is exceedingly implausible.

Isn’t one going to eat the other? Is the ICC lowering its expectations?

Geoff Allardice, ICC’s acting CEO said in an interaction with select media:

“No, I don’t think so,”

“Cricket is a very sought-after property in the Indian market, and the ICC events are very much towards the top of the pie. If our discussions with broadcasters are anything to go by, the interest in obtaining ICC rights is very high.”

The International Cricket Council continues to bet on the popularity and prestige of World Cups. One of the reasons for this is that the following rights cycle will include two additional events, resulting in one ICC event per year (two ODI WCs, four T20 WCs, and two Champions Trophies). “Having an annual event benefits our commercial and broadcast partners.” It allows them to leverage their investment on an annual basis,” said Allardice.

Is there a risk of overkill, or audience weariness, when it comes to huge ICC events?

Allardice said:

“I don’t think high-quality global events are being played too frequently. T20 cricket World Cups every two years is right. We have identified that format to grow the international game and that goes hand in hand with expanding the number of teams,”

The ongoing T20 World Cup is being played by 16 teams. It will go up to 20 teams from the 2024 edition.

The ICC has discussed going to the Indian market with a four-year concept for the first time, to ensure that the back end of an eight-year right cycle is not undersold. They haven’t said anything yet. “We’re still working through the details and various variations in terms of the duration of the agreements,” Allardice added.

The next big battleground for intellectual property is digital

A change to the WTC format is unlikely

The World Test Championship final, which concludes a two-year cycle of Test cricket. Is the fourth ICC event on the next rights calendar. ICC claims that, for the time being.
