Dwaine Pretorius: There are five different slow variations in his arsenal, and he became the captain’s go-to end-overs bowler.
“Maybe the situations of the games dictated that I might have to bowl a few of the last overs,” he said.
Dwaine is in a desperate role. Because the rest of South Africa’s attacks are so successful that they need to be used early in the innings.
“We’ve been striking quite early and our spin department has been phenomenal. So maybe Temba (Bavuma) is just struggling to get a spot for me to bowl in the middle. Because the other guys are bowling so well, so it’s left me with the end job.”
It’s a big responsibility for those who have no track record, but Dwaine Pretorius. Who had a savings rate of 10.38 with 36 overs when he died, has won in the last three games.
He took six wickets, cashed at a rate of 8.64, and surprised the batter with his variations.
In particular, Praetorius spent this tournament keeping a fairly wide line outside. The stump and delivering a variety of thrower balls with up to five different balls as weapons.
Tabraiz Shamsi called Pretorius a “scholar of the game,” after South Africa’s victory against Sri Lanka. And the allrounder confirmed as much as he explained how he has been training.
“I worked a lot on different variations of slower balls. In the T20 World Cup, if you’ve only got one option, you’d be in trouble so I am really trying to mix it up. Even though the line may be predictable, you are still not sure which ball is going to come out. Having five options is something that I have really worked hard on,” he said. “You try and prepare for every situation you may be thrown into. That’s my secret at the moment: trying to make sure that I am prepared for any situation.”
Dwaine Pretorius experienced a difficult time leading up to the tournament, with a broken rib and a positive Covid19 test.
Pretorius was appointed to the T20 World Cup team prior to George Linde. And Andile Phehlukwayo and has so far been preferred over Wiaan Mulder in the starting lineup.
He hasn’t contributed to the racket yet but has proven important in South Africa’s last four overs and he embraces the spirit of contributing to the group.
Unlike a team like India, which has been blistering for a long time with fatigue. And long-term blisters, Praetorius said the pandemic had a positive impact on South Africa.
